A 500 ml jam jar with a white lid. This cache’s name means “I am not a tourist, I am a scientist”
The cache contains a “first to find” pin, a logbook to sign, a plastic dinosaur, a wooden camping spork, a little man to be photographed on his travels, a sealed packet of hot chocolate, a toy fish and some dominoes. It is situated in a sheltered area near the top of the path leading to the crater of the Khorgo Terkhiin Tsagaan volcano. You can hike all the way round the crater top and see some really cool rock formations, both in the volcano and the surrounding area (for example the cave of the yellow dog and the stalagmites next to the lake). Enjoy the spectacular view from the top!
I have been visiting Terkhiin Tsagaan lake for four years searching for the bar-headed goose, which makes one of the most amazing migrations on earth, over the top of the Himalayas from the Tibetan Plateau, where it breeds, into India for the winter. Since I’m doing research here, we quickly learnt how to say “I’m not a tourist, I’m a scientist” as a joke and it’s kind of stuck. So far in our work we’ve found out that the bar-headed goose can fly north from sea-level over the Himalayas (6,000 m elevation) in as little as seven hours – a feat that would almost certainly render us unconscious, if not dead. While you are here at Terkhiin Tsagaan, look out for big flocks of pale grey birds – these are thousands of bar-headed geese, but you won’t be able to get close to them, they are very afraid of people. You’ll find the largest flocks down at the southern end of the lake. Enjoy the Terkhiin Tsagaan lake area - a truly beautiful piece of earth!
This is the first cache I have placed, and it was laid on a collaborators birthday, 18th July 2011 as the end point of a big scavenger hunt. We also visited an ovoo and some ancient stone statues, which can be found at the far south of the lake about 40 minutes drive away, which is also where we normally camp. I’m afraid I’ll only be able to service this cache once or twice a year at most, so if you would be so kind as to carry out any maintenance when you see it, I’d be really grateful.
