Geocache Description:

Snaefellsness has an extremely diverse geology and contains rock formations from almost all periods in the geological history of Iceland. The Snaefellsjökull system of volcanoes forms a strong geological whole, and there is evidence of individual eruptions both from the last glacial period of the ice age and from recent times.

The volcanic system is 30 km long, stretching from Maelifell in the East to Öndverdanes in the West and contains over 20 lava fields. The heart of the system is a large magma chamber that lies a few kilometres beneath the glacier. Most of the rock formations in the national park are from the last glacial period if the ice age or from recent times.

The mountains North of Snaefellsjökull glacier are made from volcanic tuff, formed by eruptions under the glacier or under the sea. It is thought that mount Svalbufa is the eastern most part of a crater that erupted under the sea.

Lava fields are prevalent in the landscape of the national park, both ragged block lava and smoother ropy lava. A large proportion of them have their origin in Snaefellsjökull, either from the crater in its summit or from craters in its sides.
You will find all sorts of beautiful lava formations – and the area has many caves.

The Hellnahraun lava field, just North of Arnarstapi and Hellnar is thought to be around 4000 years old and to have flowed from a crater that is now under the glacier of Snaefellsjökull.
East of the bay of Hellnar a long rock called Valasnös stretches out into the sea. It contains one of the most peculiar caves found in Iceland.

In Hellnar you find the national park’s visitor centre on the coordinates N 64.45.028, W023.39.125. It is open daily from 9 – 17:00 from 20.5.-10.9.. The entrance is free. At the visitor centre you can aquire informations about the national park and the centre has an exhibition.

Jarðfræði Snæfellsness er afar fjölbreytt og jarðmyndanir eru frá nær öllum tímabilum í jarðsögu Íslands. Eldstöðvakerfið sem kennt er við Snæfellsjökul er sterk landslagsheild og sýnir menjar eftir einstæð eldsumbrot, bæði frá síðasta jökulskeiði og eftir að ísöld lauk. Fjöllin norðan Snæfellsjökuls eru úr móbergi og hafa myndast við gos undir jökli eða í sjó.
Hraun eru áberandi í landslagi þjóðgarðins, bæði úfin apalhraun og sléttari helluhraun. Stór hluti þeirra hefur runnið úr Snæfellsjökli, bæði úr toppgígnum og úr gígum í hlíðum fjallsins. Hraunmyndanir eru margbreytilegar og fallegar og er svæðið auðugt af hellum.

Snæfellsnes besitzt eine sehr abwechslungsreiche Geologie mit Felsformationen aus fast jedem Zeitalter der geologischen Geschichte Islands. Das Snæfellsjökull-System aus Vulkanen bildet ein starkes geologisches Ganzes. Es lassen sich einzelne Eruptionen sowohl aus der Eiszeit als auch solche aus jüngeren Tagen nachweisen.
Die Berge nördlich des Snæfellsjökull-Gletschers bestehen aus Vulkantuff, der durch Eruptionen unterhalb des Gletschers oder unterhalb des Meeres seine Form erhielt.
Lavafelder beherrschen das Bild der Landschaft im Nationalpark, bestehend sowohl aus kantigen Lavablöcken als auch aus weich geformten Gestein. Ein großer Anteil davon stammt ursprünglich aus Snæfellsjökull, entweder vom Krater am Gipfel oder einen der Seitenkrater. Man findet in der Gegend alle Arten wunderschöner Lavaformationen und zahlreiche Höhlen.

Es wird vermutet, dass das Hellnahraun-Lavafeld nördlich von Arnarstapi und Hellnar etwa 4.000 Jahre alt ist und aus einem Krater floss, der sich jetzt unter dem Gletscher befindet. Östlich der Bucht ragt ein Fels namens Valasnös ins Meer. Er enthält eine der sonderbarsten Höhlen Islands.

In Hellnar findet man das Besucherzentrum des Nationalparks an den Koordinaten N 64.45.028, W023.39.125. Es ist vom 20.5. – 10.9. täglich von 9 – 17 Uhr geöffnet. Der Eintritt ist frei. Man kann dort Informationen über den Nationalpark bekommen und eine Ausstellung besuchen.
