Geocache Description:

This cache is SirJ-Oz's first cache. I was going to make it a traditional cache but couldn't pass up the opportunity to math-geek it up a little.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines Origin as;

Math. A fixed point from which measurement or motion commences.

The fixed point from which the measurement and motion commences for this cache will have you standing in front of the sculpture "Origin".

Origin was commissioned by the Chadstone Shopping Centre and was sculpted by Greg Johns. More information about the sculptor and sculpture is available at http://www.gregjohnssculpture.com/free_forms/origin.html

Method

Once at the Origin, collect the following information from the plaque
(NOTE #1: Some details on the plaque differ from those on the interwebs - use the ones on the plaque)
(NOTE #2: I found my GPS reception was getting a bit sketchy near the sculpture - must be all that steel)

The date on the third line = abcd
The date on the second line = efgh
A = a + c
B = g + b
C = The number of lines of text on the plaque
D = g + c
E = d - b
F = f + b
G = f - b

Using the initial coordinates, project a location defined with;
Bearing: ABC.D
Distance: EFG metres.

The vantage point at GZ (or perhaps 3m to the east of GZ) provides a pleasant perspective of the sculpture "Origin".

The cache is a micro with just a log sheet, so bring a writing implement. The hiding place should be fairly obvious.

Congratulations on joint FTF: Starruby & C@H - less than an hour after the cache went on-line... I guess you gotta be quick.

2011-08-01 update: The cache is only two days old and there seems to be a fence that has been erected in front of the sculpture. There is still access to the plaque as the fence doesn't block off access completely.

2011-08-06 update: The fence has been enhanced. It now surrounds the sculpture and includes a gate with a slide bolt which can be padlocked shut, it is not currently bolted or locked, but I fear this may soon be the case.

2011-11-01 update: A number of cachers have found the gate to be padlocked, so I'm providing an alternative method of calculating numbers which doesn't involve jumping the gate.

2011-12-14 update: The fence is once again absent, so we are back to using the original calculations.

2017-08-29 update: The GZ area was terraformed, so the hide has changed nature slightly, hint updated to match.
