One of the most famous quotes regarding the Aegishjalmur is in
the Volsunga Saga, a book of Icelandic prose written in the late
thirteenth century:
And Fafnir said: "A face of terror resisted against all
those people, after which I meditated on the heritage of my
brother, and threw poison everywhere, so that no one dared to
approach me, and was not afraid of weapon, and never had so many
men before me, although I considered myself not stronger than all
of them but all the men I had great fear."
Sigurd said: "Few got the victory by Aegishjalmur , for
whoever comes between Many will discover one day that no man is so
far the strongest of all."
In neo-paganism Aegishjalmur is often tattooed as a protective
charm. However, there is evidence of the use of Aegishjalmur
tattoos in the Nordic peoples before Christianity, as shown by the
the writings of Roman historians like Tacitus and Dion Cassius in
relation to the Germanic tribes that beset the empire, or the
account of Ahmad ibn Fadlan in the tenth century on his meeting
with the Rus' from Scandinavia.
The Aegishjalmur is the official symbol of the coat of arms of
the Icelandic country, Strandasysla.
Disclaimer:
Do not approach this series lightly. If this were only a 500'
bushwhack, I would call it hellish. The roots will trip you, the
branches will shred you and poke your eyes, and the insects will
consume you. But it's not 500'. It's over 12 bloody miles! I highly
recommend you bring snake boots, lots of water, long pants, long
sleeve shirt, lots of water, good hat, pokey stick, lots of water,
spare everything, bug spray, lots of water, writing utensils, cell
phone, lots of water.
Did I mention bring lots of water?
