A multi-cache around Stirchley, Birmingham.
Stirchley is somewhat optimistically described by estate agents as
“up and coming”. Stirchley residents have been waiting
some years for Stirchley to either “up” or
“come”…
However, this multi-cache points back to Stirchley’s glory
days as an important hub of transport, leisure and work. It takes
in a nice walk along a canal, a river, then through Stirchley
itself. It also passes two other fun caches.
We start just outside Bournville station at N52 25.602 W001
55.549
Electric trams ran until June 191A
Hazelwell, Lifford and Dogpool railway stations closed in the
19B0s
Walk down the ramp then along the canal (you will pass GC1BN1E
almost straight away and then leave the canal right near GC1BN0X),
exiting at the Pershore road junction to walk to N52 25.328 W001
55.275.
Cadbury came to Stirchley in 187C
By 19D7, Eccles Caravans had outgrown their premises in
Gosta Green.
Cross the road and head down Fordhouse Lane, taking the River Rea
route on your left (which branches off roughly opposite Beilby
Road) to end up at N52 25.600 W001 55.117.
In 187E Dogpool Mill was being used by C Clifford and Sons
for making copper and brass products.
It’s only a short walk from here to N52 25.571 W001
55.327
The gold Roman coin found in Stirchley dates to F0AD
Now walk to N52.25.731 W001 55.369.
There was a 950 seat cinema at 1G49-51 Pershore Road
The Pavillion Cinema opened on 28th November 19H1
The final cache is at N52 DE.FGC W001 5E.BAH.
Updated August 2011 - Looks like this got muggled, have now
replaced it. In order to minimise muggling, please walk to the
cache on the paths. You only need to come off the paths right near
the cache, and at that point you will then be hidden from view of
any muggle-houses apart from one which is friendly and knows the
cache is there. Please replace the cache as found, just tucked out
of sight, not buried deep!
There is no need to go anywhere you shouldn’t/climb over
anything to get to the cache, which is a small black box with room
for trackables etc. To celebrate it being replaced, I've added a
trackable, along with a small toy, marble, pencil etc.
Cache is less than 5 minutes’ walk from the starting point.
