Welcome to Maldon's Secret Garden
This is the story of a small walled garden set in the centre of Maldon, Essex. It is an old garden site and suffered a period of neglect but is now being cared for by volunteers from Maldon & Heybridge Horticultural Society.
Where is the Garden?
In White Horse Lane, Maldon. Access is from either White Horse Lane or from the High Street through an alley called Chequer's Lane. The garden is about one-fifth of an acre and it is bounded on all sides by high red-brick and stone walls and the only entrance is a narrow gate in the wall.
The paths are rather narrow, the surface is of gravel and grass - it may be difficult for wheelchairs to get around the entire garden but access to part is available and the garden can still be seen and enjoyed.
There is a public car park in White Horse Lane. Parking on Sundays and Bank Holidays is FREE.
The Garden's History
The design suggests a Georgian origin but the site has been in cultivation for far longer and it is probably on the site of a garden belonging to Maldon's Carmelite Friary. This friary was dissolved by Henry VIII and the site was then occupied by a Tudor mansion. This was replaced at the beginning of the 19th century by two Georgian houses called Friary West and Friary East which are still in use. The garden from that time was private and let to tenant gardeners who planted many fruit trees, vines and flowering plants. The last tenant gardener was a keen plants man and many of the trees and plants there now may be attributed to his interest in the garden. In the 1970s the garden was shut up and lay neglected until the Maldon & Heybridge Horticultural Society showed an interest in
restoring it once again to a working garden. The early work carried out by volunteers of the Society revealed a network of narrow paths between box hedges. Many interesting plants were recorded and a mass of bulbs came to life once the overgrowth had been removed and the sunlight was let in.
When is the Garden open to visitors?
The Garden is normally open for visitors on the FIRST SUNDAY of every month from 10.00am to 4.00pm. The closing time may depend on the weather or the number of volunteers there. On these days volunteers gather for a general working party and helpers and visitors are welcomed. Parties from local schools or other groups are a regular feature and such visits can be made by prior arrangement.
To find the cache you will need the answers to the following questions:
