This is an easy park and grab just below Cumberland's Water Filtration Plant (Evitt's Creek Water Company).
From 1871 to September 15, 1913, the city of Cumberland was served with water taken directly from the Potomac River. When the system was first installed the supply was clean, but the growth of population and manufacturing above the intake finally rendered the water unfit for use. The increasing number of deaths from typhoid fever convinced the people of the city that something had to be done to obtain a safe water supply.
It was decided that the best possible supply could be obtained from Evitt’s Creek. With an impounding reservoir being necessary, a site was selected two miles from the Maryland line in Pennsylvania. A dam 80 ft. high, having a spillway 150 ft. long, would flood an area of 175 acres and store 1.8 million gallons of water. The reservoir is now known as Lake Gordon.
The total cost of the entire system, including the dam, a filter plant, a nine mile pipeline and distribution reservoir in the city, with land, right of ways, roads, etc., was about $600,000. Work was started in December 1911, and in September of 1913, the new water was sent into the city mains by the City of Cumberland’s “Evitt’s Creek Water Company”.
The cache is hidden near the road just below the plant. Lots of tree cover so let me know if you have trouble with the coordinates. Still should be an easy find. Cache contains a log book and pencil with room for swag.
