Geocache Description:

This is a cemetery and there can be no caching before dawn or after dark. Please be respectful of the area and those that are laid to rest here.

This should be an easy find. The container is too small for a pencil or pen so please bring one. Replace the container as found.

Leased from John and Sophie Pratt to the Board of Trust School District #6, dated 10/14/1843, members of board Norton, Shipman, John and Abraham Keefer for burying and school. Five dollars was paid to each officer for ½ acre of land.
Board was to pay tax and to fence land with a “good and substantial fence:”
A quick claim deed dated 3/10/1871 and later record on 6/26/1871 was given to the Township of Allen by Randall Pratt, John Pratt and Harriet Pratt Lord, heirs of John and Sophie for $1. relinquished all claims. However it stated Township was to keep land brushed and fenced in a suitable manner, that the land be used for cemetery purposes and that if these terms were not met the land would revert back to the Pratt heirs.
On 1/8/1895 an additional amount of land that adjoined the cemetery to the west equaling about one square rod was purchased from James and Esther Evans for $1.00
Many of the graves in this cemetery are set aside as Potter’s Field. There are two stones which have inscriptions in memory of young men that gave their lives during the Civil War, Newman Crane, age 17, wounded battle of South Mountain 9/14/1861, died at Frederick MD 10/10/1861. William Price, enlisted in Co G MI Cav 9/14/1861, reenlisted US Army 1/4/1864, killed at Franklin TN 11/30/1864. There are also many children buried in this cemetery. One of the oldest marked graves James Conway, son of J & M Conway, died 9/13/1859, 1 yr, 11 m. It is likely there are older ones, since the pauper’s graves are unmarked.

This cache is placed in memory of the lady whose identity you will discover. This lady was an educated woman that attended nearby Hillsdale College. She lived in a one room cabin close by. A story that was recalled to me about her was that one day while she was in Hillsdale on her way to grocery shop at Market House when right in the four corners her horse decided to lay down right there and give birth to a colt. She picked the colt up in placed it in her buggy and continued on her way and did her shopping before returning home.

Information obtained from 150 Years in the Hills and Dales and Allen Michigan Cemetery Records 1836 to 1980
