This is the site of the first railway station, opened by The Midland Counties Railway on a single track, being doubled in 1840.
In 1844 the Midland Counties amalgamated with the North Midland Railway and Birmingham & Derby Junction Railway to form the Midland Railway. The Erewash line opened in 1847 and thus a new station was built nearer the town centre on Toton Lane now Nottingham Road.
