Summary: Cache hidden across tennis courts from Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden, complete with water features and bronze statues of favorite characters Ramona, Henry, and Ribsy.
Description: Our daughter grew up in the ‘80’s reading Beverly Cleary novels about life in our very own NE Portland neighborhood with characters from Klickitat Street. These were stories she related to, just as Cleary had hoped when she wrote them to encourage young readers. Amanda is an avid reader AND geocacher, so here is a hide near the Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden in gratitude to the author and in honor of Ferguam! The bronze statues of Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Ribsy the dog are connected to water features that run in the summer afternoons. Look for the fountain tiles that note each of Cleary’s books in the series, beginning in 1950, and a short quote about each of the bronzed characters. Beverly Cleary (born April 1916) attended the dedication of the garden on October 13, 1995, and shared her memories of Grant Park and Grant High School in the 1930’s. She continued to write from her home in Carmel, CA, until her death in March 2021. The cache is placed in a busy area of the park in some seasons, and hopefully can be maintained here. It has been moved after repeated muggling, and Geo-Stealth will be required here as well! You’re looking for an "other" with log only, BYOP. Thanks for idea from NY cachers Ferguam, but "this is not NYC!" Please replace as hidden (out of direct sight). BIG CONGRATS to northwesttreehugger for a harder-than- expected FTF!!! 8/6/23: Moved and change of hide to preempt muggle-ing. 5/13/15: Replaced after muggling, and moved slightly. Still dark and attractive, but now more hidden and may need to be felt rather than seen. Exact spoiler info in hint... 9/28/15: This cache complies with the geocaching policies of Portland Parks and Recreation properties. Please respect park hours (open 5 a.m. until midnight) when caching.
