CONGRATS TO SHOTTSY - FIRST TO FIND
Winding through downtown Memphis are the railroad tracks that were once used by the Illinois Central Railroad for its passenger train operations between Chicago and New Orleans. As recently as 50 years ago, there were 5 trains operating daily in each direction from Central Station, which is just a short walk from here.
Beginning in the 1940's, the Panama Limited was the premier train on the Illinois Central --- an extra fare streamliner equipped with Pullman sleeping cars, a club lounge car, and a twin dining car; all in a distinctive brown, orange and gold design. The Panama Limited was the pride of the railroad. It is said that Wayne Johnson, a former president of the IC, was in the habit of asking whether #6 had arrived on time, when he got to his office in the morning. The Panama Limited used to make the run from New Orleans to Chicago in 16 1/2 hours. (e.g. 4:30 pm to 9 am) [These days, Amtrak's City of New Orleans train requires almost 19 hours for the same trip --- 1:45 pm - 9am. That's slower, but the view is better from Amtrak's bi-level cars.]
