MST: Mandurah Significant Trees

This series is based on a register we found by accident that is maintained by Mandurah City Council of significant trees in the area.  Some of these trees are icons around Mandurah, others are unique examples of their species, and others are just magnificent trees, but all are worth taking a look at.

Santulum Seeds

The Quandong trees (Santalum Accuminatum) may be small, but they are highly significant to both people and widlife.  Quandong fruit was an important bush-food for local Aboriginal people.  These unique tress produce fleshy fruits during the summer months which are relished by native birds and people alike.  Quandon trees are semi-parasitic and survive by attaching roots to other shrubs and grasses and drawing out water and nutrients.  The remnant groves of particularly old Quandongs have been retained in this park where they will continue to grow and set fruit.  The nuts, resembling a round peach seed, are often used in craft and wood work.
