My first temporary job, many, (many, many) years ago was as a keypunch operator; (that was somewhere not long after the invention of the wheel....). So, I thought I'd remind some our more "mature" cachers of long ago times, before laptops, iphone, etc. And for the younger cachers, you might be curious enough to research the history of keypunch/punch cards and see what our world was like in the 'old days'.
I'll give you a thumbnail look at the development of computer language, of ASCII, COBOL (acronym for COmmon Business Oriented Language) which is the oldest programming language. Then there was FORTRAN (acronym for FORmula TRANslator), programming developed for scientific and engineering communities, and PASCAL, which is/was procedural language for structured programs, games, etc.
Anyhoo, going back to 1890, keypunch cards were developed - stiff cards that information was entered on, said information being represented by the presence (or absence) of holes, in pre-defined positions. First used by the U.S. Census (figures, doesn't it), these cards & technology soon became the darling of almost every type of business/industry as the primary medium for input of data. Special machines were developed to do this manually, and then electrically, then electronically.
That's a short version of a l-o-n-g development of computer programing/info storage.
Following is an example. Why not try your hand at decoding it ... it's worth a smiley

Kudos to talk2azs. for his speedy FTF!!!
