The Horse
Trough
New York actress Minnie Maddern Fiske campaigned to improve the
lives of workhorses and donated more than 100 troughs across the
U.S. in the early 1900s. Grand Forks’ 5-ton granite trough
was first placed downtown near the original, 1879 Grand Forks
County Courthouse. When cars outnumbered horses, our trough was
moved out of the way to Sweet Clover Creamery, by the river. Later
Ed Bohnhoff, a Central High School coach and radio personality, led
the charge to relocate the trough to its Gateway site.
