Geocache Description:

micro cache (film canister size)

Mrs Indiana J1 lived on the Castle Road when there was no housing estate and only the two houses, the Gatehouse and the Gardeners Cottage situated near the monument. It was a lovely avenue of trees, which it still is to some extent.

This beautiful memorial commemorates the Polish 25th Infantry Battalion, a unit of the Polish 4th Infantry Division. They were finishing their training in the north of Scotland and were stationed in Invergordon.
The plan was to move them to NW Europe for action there, but with the end of the war it never happened.

The 25th remained at Castle Camp Invergordon sited on what is known locally as 'The Bumpy Road'
In photos (in Invergordon Archives) Invergordon Mains Farm Steading can be seen in the background which gives you a good idea of where the camp was situated. The Polish soldiers lived in "Nissan" huts and marked out the borders of their gardens with boulders. They also made hand crafted items, which they sold, to have an income.

On the gradual demobilization of the Polish army at the end of the war, many of the soldiers returned to Poland eventually forming a unit of the Polish Re-settlement Corps. By then (1947) they were no longer based at Castle Camp at Invergordon, but some stayed to marry local girls.

The Remembrance Service is held every year in November.

The road, to the left of the monument, takes you on a short walk, round what we call the horseshoe. Going through the gates, 800 yards or so on the right, in the woods, is where Invergordon Castle was situated. The old castle was destroyed by fire and was replaced by a modern mansion in 1872, which was demolished in 1928.
The House of Rosskeen is ahead, this is the home of Daphne Mackenzie, the widow of the late Col HAC Mackenzie. who managed Dalmore distillery after the war.
Taking the road round to the right takes you past the castle stables. Continuing on, you can see Kincraig Castle Hotel (previously Kincraig House) which was built by the owner of Invergordon Castle.
We love the area, and it is loaded with history, including our own.
