Geocache Description:

A rare and impressive view from a public lookout into an operating granite quarry. Even though only meters from the road, most people pass without ever stopping.

The history and economy of the area are closely tied to the production and processing of granite, the local variety being a light gray stone known as “Stanstead gray”. Historically, a main use for this granite was to make cobblestones for paving the streets of cities like Montreal. Now, granite is popular in making memorials such as tombstones. There are many granite quarries and processing facilities in the region. The nearby hamlet is called “Graniteville”. The town of Beebe (now part of Stanstead) has proudly called itself the “Granite Capital of Canada”. The town of Rock Island (also now part of Stanstead) boasts a granite museum.

The cache (a sealed coffee container covered in dark tape) contains an assortment of small items suitable for children and, as an extra incentive for the FTF, a Canadian “twonie”.
