Geocache Description:

This log only, micro cache is a park and grab, placed near a post office in the town I grew up in and not far from home. Don't forget to bring your own pen and please remember to replace the cache exactly as you found it. There is a public bus stop near-by. Congrats to uws22 & bme22 for FTF! :-)

I decided to place a cache here for two reasons. First of all, there aren't very many caches in Thermal. The second and more important reason is because as kids my brothers and I would wait after school at this post office for our parents to pick us up from the school (then K-8, now K-5) due south of the post office. I have many fond memories here and wanted to share some of them and the town with the geocaching community. Though I don’t remember it I’m told by my parents that my older brother used to sit on the counter, as a toddler, and visit with the staff. My parents also tell me that when I was in kindergarten, and probably first grade, my older brother and I were often taken into the back room and given a cup of punch and a cookie while we waited. I have many fond memories of time spent waiting for our parents to pick us up and talking with the staff, though we always made sure we didn't get in the way when customers came in, for the nine years I attended John Kelley School (my kindergarten through eighth-grade years). We still chat briefly when we stop in to pick up our mail, though most of the staff from that time have since retired or moved on to other things. A Little Bit of History At the back of the vacant lot next to the Thermal Boxing Club building (By the traffic light) (kitty-corner across the street) a wooden AWS lookout tower stood until just a few years ago. The Aircraft Warning Service was organized in May 1941, creating a civilian arm of the Army's Ground Observer Corps. On the west coast, the all-volunteer AWS was under the authority of the 4th Interceptor Command, based in Riverside, California. On both coasts, observation posts, information centers and filter centers were established. The United States entered World War II on Dec 7, 1941. Many of those who could not join the military for whatever reason were recruited to the AWS. This led to a great number of women, who were apparently little recognized. The AWS program was canceled on May 29, 1944, when the War Department felt that the danger of enemy bombing was over. Eight (June 6, 1944) days later the allies invaded Europe. The construction crews left a few cones here, but they are done working on the bridge and the area at ground zero is safe.
