Geocache Description:

Small lock n lock container containing logbook, pencil, sharpener and rubber.

Welcome to the Nottingham Beeston Canal Cache series!

These Geocaches are my first and a lot of thought has gone into making them. I would really appreciate any feedback on my caches so that I may improve!

This cache series takes you on a walk down a section of the Nottingham Beeston Canal, leading you down to the final cache at the Beeston Lock, where the Trent joins the Canal. The canal was established in 1790's as a link to the coal mines of the North, bypassing an unnavigable stretch of the River Trent however today it is only used by Narrow Boats and Cruisers to get into and through Nottingham.

Starting at Thane Road, you join the Canal at the “Canal Towpath”. From here you are looking at about a 30-45 minute walk down to the end of the Canal where it meets the River Trent at the Beeston Lock. The Canal is home to a variety of wild life and plants, it isn’t uncommon to look into the water and see many types of fish with Roach and Bream being the predominant species however, large Chub often show up along with the odd Carp. This makes it a great location for a spot of fishing and is quite popular with the local anglers. There are a few Swan families that live on the Canal as well, they have recently given birth and have their ducklings with them.

There is a large open field at the end of the Canal, ideal for Frisbees and ball games… I especially recommend packing a picnic and making a day of it! Whilst you’re there be sure to check out the lock, if you’re lucky you may see a few boats using the lock, it’s quite an interesting thing to watch. The Beeston Marina has a few shops where you can grab some food, a drink, an ice cream etc and there are some more interesting boats around there. There is access to continue walking along the River Trent if you feel upto it.

Care needs to be taken as there is nothing standing between you and the water. A few houses over look the place with the cache so stealth is required. Please note the cache isn't in the water or in someones back garden it's on the same side of the canal as you started.
Please take lots of photos and leave a nice log telling everyone of your day.

Thanks!
JourneyPilot
