Geocache Description:

This is the second of three caches in a mini-series we’ve organized around the New Zealand Geodetic Database. You will find two things at GZ: the cache and a geodetic marker (trig) – along with some good panoramic ocean views of the area.

Trigonometric markers are important landmarks setup by surveyors and workers at Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) for the purpose of setting boundaries for property sections & roads, determining and measuring lengths, distances as well as altitudes, and monitoring any ground ‘deformation’ that occurs geographically. The most important of these markers number only a handful around the country and have dedicated GPS sites that are closed off from public access, usually within the boundary of airports or on top of important mountains. Beacons (trigs) are of next importance, and are either a painted concrete post that rises about 1 metre off the ground (like the one you will find near this cache) or are a four-legged metal/wooden structure with a multidirectional black and white marker at the apex of it.

The trig station here is a concrete post with the marker code “8102”, and it’s located on the top of a grassy knoll (altitude 121 metres) near a walkway connecting Bann Street to Orchy Crescent, both off Buckley Road in Southgate. Park at either end, as either way it’s a short walk up to the marker. You’ll be greeted with views of Island Bay & Houghton Bay, the entrance to Wellington Harbour, Baring Head and even the Kaikoura Ranges on the South Island.

Due to the exposedness of the location, there are only a few very small places to hide a cache and as such it is a 200ml translucent Sistema, which when placed contained a logbook + pencil, geocaching notice, a bit of swag, a TB and a small prize for the FTF. Please rehide it well so it won’t be seen.
