Situated near St. Mary’s Church in Roecliffe, the cache is a small-sized container that can accommodate a few very small trade items. The church is still used by the community for services once a month, so please use stealth and discretion when searching for the cache.
In the lovely village of Roecliffe, near the village green is St. Mary’s Church. Found at the end of yew-lined path, this Neo-Norman church is beautiful in its simplicity. Built in 1843, its unusual barrel-vaulted roof is thought to be unique among churches in England. Stone for the construction of the church came partly from the old Roman quarry on the grounds of Aldborough Manor. There are many interesting furnishings inside, some of which originated in other churches. For instance, the marble floor and steps of the chancel, and the vestry door, were originally part of York Minster. There is also a Jacobean pulpit and a 17th century communion table. When inside, don’t forget to sign the guestbook!
St. Mary’s is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT). The CCT keeps the church open to the public and welcomes geocachers to enjoy this interesting church. If the church is locked, a key can be obtained from the house next door.
