Denis’s Long Walk is a circular route around the woodlands, footpaths and lanes around Sling, Ellwood and Little Drybrook. It gives the opportunity to pick up 7 traditional caches as well as the clues needed to solve the 8th ‘Multi cache’ of the circuit. You will need to walk the Long Walk to gather the information to answer the questions displayed on Cache #8. I have given waypoints for all the information, but the clues are pretty clear. Read them all before you head off on the walk. As an extra hint I have listed if the answers are found near to caches or on the walks between them. Happy hunting!

I have given co-ordinates for parking close to cache #1. This is the best starting position, but the loop can be completed from any start point or even reverse order, and alternative parking can be found near to cache #7. Obviously the final 8th cache will be a more complex puzzle (and longer walk) if the circuit is not undertaken in numerical order. Please park sensibly within the village and take care walking on lanes and crossing roads.

Many thanks to the Forestry Commission for giving permission for the siting of the caches and to GeoBuzzBee for inspiring me with his Heywood Walk series! Happy Caching.

Leaving the first cache continue downhill and cross Marsh Lane (there are cars about, so be careful). The Forestry Commission track leads down to what the locals call ‘Farm Wood’. The origins of this name are lost in the mists of time, but are probably as unimaginative as being the woodland near a farm! The official title is the Ellwood Enclosure and it is used regularly for timber harvesting. Please be aware that this is a working woodland area and at times vehicles and machinery will be in operation.

There is a clearly marked track to follow until you are within 50 feet of Ground Zero.
