Geschichte Die Gegend um Motovun war früh besiedelt, vorslawischen Völkern diente der Hügel als Fluchtburg. Im 10. und 11. Jahrhundert stand die entstehende Stadt unter der Herrschaft des Bischofs von Porec; schon 1278 kam Motovun in venezianischen Besitz, in dem es bis zum Ende der venezianischen Republik verblieb. Die venezianische Herrschaft gab Motovun sein architektonisches Gepräge. Die Stadt an sich ist ein kultur- und architekturgeschichtlich bedeutsames Ensemble. Sie ist zur Gänze von einem inneren und äußeren Befestigungssystem mit einzelnen Wehrtürmen und Stadttoren umgeben. Der große Hauptplatz wird von einem zinnengekrönten Wehrturm aus dem 13. Jahrhundert bewacht. Die Kirche Sveti Stjepan aus dem frühen 17. Jahrhundert, ebenfalls auf dem Hauptplatz, entstand vermutlich nach Plänen des venezianischen Architekten Andrea Palladio oder eines seiner Schüler. Bedeutsam ist auch der Kommunalpalast aus dem 16. Jahrhundert gegenüber der Stephanskirche. In der Folge des Zweiten Weltkriegs verließ die - überwiegend italienische - Bevölkerung Motovuns die Stadt. Brauchtum und Wirtschaft Motovon gilt als die Stadt des Veli Jože (deutsch „Großer Sepp“), eines gutmütigen Riesen, der als Sagenfigur in ganz Kroatien bekannt ist und vielfältige literarische Bearbeitung, so unter anderem vom bedeutenden kroatischen Dichter Vladimir Nazor, erfahren hat. Seit 1999 findet das Motovun Film Festival in Freilichtkinos statt. Unterhalb von Motovun, rechts des Flusses Mirna, erstreckt sich der periodisch überschwemmte Motovuner Eichenwald, eine der bekanntesten Fundstellen der begehrten Weißen Trüffel (Tuber magnatum) in Istrien. Die Rieden an den Hängen von Motovun liefern in manchen Jahren einen sehr guten Rotwein, den Motovunski Teran.
