Geocache Description:

Boiling Pots takes its name from the series of circular “potholes” below the river valley lookout which appear to be boiling due to the large amount of air bubbles in the water.

The cache is a medicine container with room for small items only. You will need to bring your own pen. Please return the container as you found it.

The “boiling” effect is created as the water flowing from pot to pot creates both air bubbles and circulation cells within each pot. The pots are connected both above (by the Wailuku River) and below (through lava tubes). As would be expected, the boiling effect is dependent on the strength of the flowing river. The pots can be hard to see from the overlook at times, depending on the height of the intervening vegetation on the valley slope.

There was a previous cache located along the trail going down from the overlook, but due to the number of drowning deaths in the area the pipe railing was extended across the trailhead and access cut off.
