Geocache Description:

Pinjarra

This historic town, just an hour’s drive from the city has always attracted a great deal of interest. First and foremost, the train buffs amongst us, just love visiting the railway station, which is currently the home of the Hotham Valley Tourist Railway, not to mention the current project overseeing the redevelopment  and revitalisation of the railway station and surrounds. There are numerous beautiful old buildings and historic sites for those who like to revisit the past and lots of information to support these visits.

Set on the banks of that grand old lady, the Murray River, Pinjarra has paid homage to this watercourse with the building of two distinctive bridges over the watercourse: that set right on the Harvest Highway and the suspension bridge, that has scared and charmed visitors to the town for many a long year.
Pinjarra boasts lots of trails and walks for those who like to explore and, of course, there are many opportunities to indulge in whether you are in a relaxing mood, or feeling like some physical exercise!!

Other things to see and do include horse riding and exploring the numerous bridle trails, wandering and browsing through the shops in the townsite and enjoying a meal or snack in the various eateries. Pinjarra has a series of markets happening at various localities about the town, check the Visitor Centre or the Shire of Murray website: www.murray.wa.gov.au for dates, times and localities.

The Pinjarra Suspension Bridge was constructed by the Australian Army's 22 Construction Squadron as a training exercise. The material for it's construction were provided by Alcoa of Australia. It was officially opened on 10th November 1985, by the Hon Wendy Fatin MP, the then Member for Brand. The bridge stretches across the Murray River, providing a pedestrian link between the town centre and the residential areas on the eastern side of the river. A very popular tourist attraction, the river banks have been landscaped and picnic barbeque facilities are available. Watch out for the geese!
