Geocache Description:

This cache is a renewal of GeoBigDogs cache "Stage 2 - Arlington Hotel" (GCVE86), from his cache series highlighting the stagecoach route from Santa Barbara over San Marcos Pass. You are looking for a round micro container. NOTE: If the front ticket-booth is open (which is rare) then it will be impossible to avoid the "muggles" while hunting for this one.

This was the location of the original Arlington Hotel, which was the take-off point for northbound stages from 1861-1901. There is an informational sign nearby about the stages. For the trip over the pass, six horses were used instead of the usual four, and the stage used a special lightweight stagecoach called a "mud wagon" that was stripped down and only weighed about twelve hundred pounds. The original Arlington Hotel opened in 1876 to accommodate tourists arriving on steamships at Stearns Wharf. It burned down in 1909. A second Arlington hotel opened in 1911, but it was destroyed in the 1925 earthquake. Today this is the location of the Arlington Theater - built in 1931. The red tiled building features a covered courtyard with fountain and a free-standing ticket booth. The most notable exterior feature is the Mission Revival steeple that ends in a dramatic art deco finial. However, it is the inside of the theater that is most remarkable. It is built to give the impression that you are sitting outside at night in the plaza of a colonial Spanish town. It is worth checking out.
