A stone age rath, situated on the old main road to Londonderry just outside Limavady. It is not located on The National Trust land.
Rough Fort is a stone age rath once used as a farmstead for a stone age family. The site is roughly one acre in size. There is a ditch on the outside of a raised earthen wall. The inner area would have been used by a family and they may have kept livestock in it at various times of the year.
During the Penal Law era it was used as a place to have mass. The raised walls make it a good location to avoid suspicion.
This was one of the first sites to be owned by The National Trust in Northern Ireland.
The cache is in a tablock box.
It is NOT located on the fort!!
Not wheelchair accessible!
