Aqua 2000 Research Center
This was an experimental water treatment facility built bby the City of San Diego to determine the feasibility of treating waste water with aquaculture. The waste water was pumped into ponds with water plants growing in them. The plants removed the contaminants and used them as nutrients. The theory was that the water could be sold for local agriculture and the plants would be ground up and sold as mulch. It eventually proved to be too costly as the water and mulch failed to generate enough revenue to keep it in operation.
