Geocache Description:

I had a cache just down the road from here a little while back and now its time to put out another.

As you drive along the road toward the cache you will probably notice that the road bed is narrow and elevated. This is because this road was once the rail bed for the Baltimore & Ohio (B & O) railroad. The railroad was moved several hundred feet to the south, the old rail bed was then abandoned and turned into a county road.

On this end of the road is Boggs Creek, the same creek that fills Boggs Lake to the north of the city. When you cross the open grate bridge you will be crossing over Boggs Creek, look off to the west and you will see a feature that is the source of many local legends. It is a naturally occurring “swimming spot” that was frequented quite often by local juveniles before the advent of swimming pools.

The legend that I am most fond of calls this spot Gypsy Shore. I remember my mother telling us kids about the Gypsies that would camp out there over night and then walk the railroad into town the next day seeking work. I don't know if they were real Gypsies but the images this story conjures up makes that appealing. A local legend says that Gypsy Shore (also known by other local names) is so deep that a steam engine once fell off the tracks and went into the water near Gypsy Shore to never be seen again. Perhaps the creek has shifted as this last one seems a little implausible.

You are looking for a small camouflage painted jar with a screw on top. This cache contains a log book only, there is no room for a writing instrument. Please bring your own pen and ensure that the lid is screwed on tight before replacing the container.

There is a small pull off area where you can park out of the way of traffic.
