Geocache Description:

You are looking for a particularily unusual container that requires you to BYOP. Once you have located the cache, please be sure to place it back EXACTLY as you found it. Afterward, take a stroll around the pond or rest awhile on one of the many park benches found around the perimeter. During your stroll, be sure to look for the GINORMOUS carp that call the pond "home".

A popular gathering spot since its founding in 1854, Central Park is a 47-acre, wooded get-away in the middle of downtown Ashland. The land was sold to the City of Ashland in 1900 by the Kentucky Iron Coal and Manufacturing Company for $32,500. Until August 1923, the primary activity in the park was a horseracing track. In 1936, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) constructed a central road through the park and in 1937, a pond was constructed in the southeast quadrant. Twenty years later, after complaints of mosquito problems, the pond was filled in with five feet of dirt and the space was used as a softball practice field. In the spring of 1995, the pond was re-excavated and by September, it was once again filled with water. The following spring, to the surprise and delight of the community, the original water lilies that were planted in 1937 had come back into full bloom. Fountains and numerous fish species were added and have since thrived.

Today, the park features three separate children’s playgrounds, several baseball diamonds, a horseshoe pit, several tennis courts, a basketball court and a volleyball court. In the winter, park goers can skate on the ice rink and in the summer, music lovers can attend any of a number of free concerts held in the bandstand gazebo. During the holidays, thousands flock to Central Park to view the annual holiday light show, the Winter Wonderland of Lights, in place throughout the park from Thanksgiving to New Years day.

As this is a favorite gathering place for Muggles, you will find that it will be most necessary for you to use your keen geo-stealth when locating this cache. Happy caching!
