Cache is a 1.6litre square green lock and lock box.
This cache is set close to an amazing example of the force of a wee bit of water and some cold weather....
We have driven up this bit of road more times than we can count but it wasn't until recently that we spotted this large weathered stone.
Freeze thaw generally occurs during winter months with the lower temperatures although this example obviously occurred over many thousands if not millions of years...
Initially water will get into small cracks or weaknesses in a rock and become trapped. When this water freezes it will take up 9% more space (as everyone will remember from school science lessons...)This expansion will cause pressure on the rock which will be released when the water thaws as more water accumulates the process will repeat itself and gradually large cracks will begin to form. Over time the cracks get deeper and deeper until the rock will finally break.
Hard to imagine that a wee bit of rain can do this to a rock....
Parking in small parking bay on slope side of road.
