Geocache Description:

Vexillology is the term for the study of flags. While I certainly am not a vexillologist, I do know some about them and can identify most nations' and states' flags. Flags go well beyond nations and states though. Counties and cities can have flags, too.

I'm sure a large percentage of the local population has no idea there is a flag for the City of Buffalo, and it's a very nice one too. Unfortunately it's not displayed in very many places, including in front of Buffalo City Hall. The location of this cache is one of only a couple places where it can be seen.

Buffalo's flag dates back to 1924 went it was selected during a design competition. The flag has a navy blue field with a circular picture in the middle of a sailboat on Lake Erie. Emanating from the circle are thirteen lightning bolts with thirteen stars between them. The stars symbolize New York as one of the original thirteen colonies and the lightning bolts signify Buffalo as one of the first electrified cities.

The cache is hidden in a very busy place, namely in the heart of the Central Business District in downtown, in a small park known as Five Flags Park. It would be wise to not search for this cache during normal business hours as you will be seen. After 6:00 during the week, on the weekends or on holidays would be your best opportunity. Parking is up to you as it is limited in the area. It is free to park on Swan Street one block away after 5:00 and on the weekends.
