Geocache Description:

[Eng] Kempton Park’s first hospital

[Afr] Kempton Park se eerste hospitaal

[English] When Jan Smuts Airport was built, it was felt that an emergency service should be established in the area as the facilities in Germiston and Boksburg were not easily accessible and already at full capacity.  The Isabella de Villiers Maternity home opened its doors in April 1958 to fulfil not only this role, but with its complete medical facilities, the maternity home served as an emergency hospital and theatre for many other medical and surgical cases for 18 years. Isabella de Villiers maternity Home was established after representations were made to establish a hospital in the area in 1947.  The population of the town was also increasing rapidly.  Under the chairmanship of Ds. RM de Villiers the clinic was approved in principle.  Two doctors recognised the immediate need for a maternity home and with the Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie they resolved to take action.  The town Council continued to press for a general hospital and in June 1965 the provincial authorities agreed.  Kempton Park Hospital was build and admitted its first patients in 1976.   Today the Isabella Clinic has yet another role to play in the community – that of dental clinic and some district clinical services.
