POT O GOLD Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

cache.4u: It is with a heavy heart that I feel I must archive this cache as of today. I won't go into any details, and learned a long time ago that people that live in glass houses should not throw stones. Suffice it to say that this was a learning experience for me and when I do decide it find another home for this container, it will not be anywhere near as susceptible to non geo-cachers. This cache has been in place for less than four months and has already garnered nine favorites. Thanx to all.

Geocache Description:

This Cache is in the Beautiful, Charles Daley Park. It is a day park, but many years ago it was a campground, run by the Niagara Parks Commission. We lived within 10 miles and I would yank the yard apes out of their beds in the late hours and drive ‘til they fell asleep, and then would pull into the park and set up our camp. These monsters, upon waking in the morning would gaze out over the lake in awe, never suspecting that Daddy took them camping 10 miles from home. This remained one of our favourite spots to camp even after they caught on to the ruse. It was also convenient enough that they could spend most of their summer there, while their mother and I took turns driving to our jobs.

Now, onto the Cache and the reason for the name. Most of the items that I leave for swag will be small precious metal pieces. Not all that interesting for a little monster, but hopefully enough to spur some interest in their collective young brains. Ontario is very rich in precious metals, and yet when potential investors get curious, we are inundated with measurement terms that are only used for these commodities and certainly not terms we run across in everyday life, so this will be a short introduction and maybe we can create some young investors. Anyone can own a piece of paper that says you own stock in a large bank or auto company, but that does not even compare to having a nice shiny ingot of metal you can hold in your hand.

One TROY pound = 12 Troy ounces
One Troy ounce = 480 grains or 31.1 grams

You will see many more measurements, but if you can get a handle on these, you can start investing wisely.
As of this morning Gold is listed at $1639.00 per ounce
Silver was listed at $40.30 per ounce
Copper was listed at $ 0.27 per ounce. (Copper is generally quoted by the pound $4.30)…. as an aside one Canadian penny weighs 2.35 grams. It is fairly easy to see why the Canadian mint saw fit to discontinue using copper to make pennies. The amount of copper in an ounce of pennies would be equal to at least twice the face value of the coins.
Are you beginning to see the value of possessing a simple understanding of metals?
This Cache will originally consist of a sampling of metal ingots in various sizes. Naturally, there will be no solid Gold. All samples will vary in weights to balance out size vs. content. Silver will be the smallest and probably be in 5 grain ingots and copper will be larger and likely in 5 gram ingots. (notice gram and grain) ? That is important when buying. Unscrupulous sellers will throw these terms around as if they are meaningless. They also will say things are pure silver when they are actually only Sterling ( which is only 92.5% silver as opposed to 99.9% which is readily accepted as PURE.
Please don’t let Gold Rush Fever go to your head. A 5 grain ingot of pure 99.9% silver @ $40.30 per ounce will be worth $40.30/ (480 grains/5) = 42 cents. Naturally it costs some to produce and or procure these trinkets but this cache should not be perceived as pirate treasure.
There is also brass, niobium, aluminum, platinum and Gold plate as well as some shavings of metals in glass tubes. Please treat this cache with the same courtesy as any other. I am trusting you not to fill your pockets as that would just spoil it for the next visitor. Naturally, I wouldn’t expect you to take only one item especially if you have two screaming monsters with you. The rules are no different for this cache than any other. I will try to replenish when possible, weather permitting.

Please be respectful and place the container back in it’s original spot and, as a matter of course be ever vigilant of muggles. …………….And Pleeeeeeze take the time to walk out to the lakeshore and gaze out over Lake Ontario. That view is Priceless!
