Mesquite-Cedar Hill, Sister Cities-WGT Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

allenmabry: My apologies. I didn't realize it had not been found in so long. Even though I am especially proud of the fake history I created on the cache page, I am letting this one go. I guess a 12 year run isn't too bad.

Geocache Description:

You seek a camouflaged bison tube. (as of 11/28/2017)

The second installment of the "Caching Drives Success" series. Some cachers have *drive*. They need to find a cache every *day*. Caches are the fuel for their success and they gobble them up like Pac Man gobbles up energy pellets.

Success Factor: Friendship
Cache in Cedar Hill and you will find mesquite. Cache in Mesquite and you will find cedar. This is no accident. Although, technically, Mesquite's first plat was registered in 1873, the friendship between these two now-thriving towns began much earlier. Early Cedar Hill pioneer Crawford Treese and early Mesquite-area settler Widow Brown struck up a friendship. Treese brought her several cedar trees as a present, claiming that the trees provide better shade from the Texas sun than scraggly mesquite and are just as drought tolerant. To reciprocate, she bestowed upon him several mesquite trees, ostensibly because the seed pods can be eaten by cattle during drought conditions. She asked only that he dig them up and transport them. She mainly wanted the darn things cleared off her land. Thus the phrase, "friends with benefits" was born. Though Treese and Brown did not marry, they thought to formalize their friendship by declaring their communities to be Sister Cities. This would have been consummated in 1887 during the incorporation of Mesquite, had the document not been tragically lost during the Civil War.

(This "historical" account is, of course, fictitious. For the real history of these two cities, check out the links below.)

Successful people know that friendships can be an important factor in their success. In addition, they remember the old Swedish proverb that " shared joy is a double joy and shared sorrow is half a sorrow."

This cache is hidden along the Westover Greenbelt bike trail (WGT). Be watchful for PI. You may choose to hike or bike the trail. Parking is available at the northwest and southeast ends and the midpoint of the trail. The park closes from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. under City Ordinance #3617. All dogs must be controlled by leash (same ordinance).

The cache was a pill bottle, then a boating keyring float, and now is a bison tube. Bring your own writing instrument. Please leave the cache top in place when removing the bottom and log in order to sign the log.

Coordinates averaged for 9 and 6.5 minutes to 100% sample confidence and 4-16 ft variance under tree cover and clear skies. Sign the log to claim a find.

Congratulations to RAA for FTF
