Geocache Description:

This was a favourite spot for my brother and I to visit after church each Sunday as youngsters. Mom would bring a few slices recently moulded bread stuffed in a plastic bag in her purse, to Church each Sunday because she knew the inevitable question would be: “Can we go feed the deer, Mom… Please!”

I must say though, I’m surprised by how few people these days know about this long standing attraction in our community. What was once a common reason to visit Waterford, is now, not even mentioned in any of the tourism pamphlets for Norfolk County. Such a shame. This is why I now bring this reminiscent Geocache to you! Bring your camera, tell your friends, come back at different times of year to see the seasonal changes to the deer, and continue in the 70 year tradition that is The Waterford Deer Park.

Here’s a brief history:

In 1942, the former Waterford Public Utilities Commission established the exotic English fallow deer herd in its current location as a means of keeping down grass and weeds in a 17 acre wellhead area. The deer are prolific and have had no trouble maintaining their numbers since then. However, in 2009, coyotes got into the compound and killed off the does of the herd, putting its future in jeopardy. Thankfully, in 2010, council voted 7-1 in favour of taking the necessary steps to bring in more does for the herd, and fortify the fences to keep predators out. I visited the park yesterday and saw 11 deer… How many will you see? Add your pics too!

Note: These are real deer… with real teeth. Please don’t let your youngsters put their fingers through the fence. I’m hoping you can create some memories of smiles, not tears.

Second Note: The scratch on my arm seems to indicate that this cache is located in an environment that’s home to some pretty thorny bushes and trees. Please be careful – especially with the kids. Bush whacking is not necessary.
