Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the former 22 1/2 mile road bridge over the St. Joe River.

Built in 1906, this bridge is the last remaining truss bridge in Michigan built by the Elkhart Bridge and Iron Company.

Most truss bridges have the same general appearance, but while most have pinned connections, this bridge has riveted connections instead. This bridge is also unusual because it lacks v-lacing on its vertical members. V-lacing is present under the top chord of this bridge however. This bridge is six panels in length, and sits on concrete abutments. The bridge decking is made of wood and its original lattice guardrails still remain.

The bridge has been closed to traffic for several years with many of the lattices being very rusted and its blue paint fading in appearance, but it does have a very scenic appearance nonetheless.
