This cache is dedicated to Ted Williams. Williams was considered to be the greatest hitter that ever lived. Ted Williams played his entire career wearing a Red Sox jersey. In 1941, he batted a .406. He was the last batter to ever hit over .400. His nickname was "The Splendid Splinter." Ted Williams was stationed here on Oahu while serving in the U.S. Navy.Williams served as a flight instructor and flew the F4U Corsair fighter plane. The cache is located where Ted Williams spent most of his free time perfecting his craft. During World War II, the cache location was called Mooring Mast Field. On August 18, 1945, Williams was sent overseas to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. While on Oahu, Ted Williams played in the Army baseball League. Also, in that league were Joe DiMaggio, PeeWee Reese, and Joe Gordon. According to an eyewitness named Theo Belic, "when the Japanese attacked on Dec. 7, 1941, they flew right over our camp and we saw them strafe the field." So, while searching for this cache, have fun, but also take a moment to reflect on the rich history that we are surrounded by everyday here on O‘ahu.
CONGRATULATIONS TO N6QIH FOR BEING THE FIRST TO FIND THIS CACHE!!!!
