Cry Baby, Cry Baby

In May 2011, my wife and I decided to have a little cache race. We had both found over a 100 caches in a day before but they were typical park and grabs. We wanted to race for something a little more challenging. After a little discussion and thinking on ideas given to us by others, we decided to only count the total star of difficulty / terrain for our top 100 caches of the month of June. This sort of 'friendly' competition wouldn't be as fun if there weren't some stakes involved so we settled on the following. The loser must hide a cache depicting the results of the race as well as be the fetcher of all P&G caches we picked up during July.

The race was on and we both came out strong with her picking up some rvstauff's more challenging caches and I avenging a few of my DNFs earlier in the year. We are a household (at the time) of one vehicle and one true GPS, we agreed to share these for the race but that proved difficult. Cacher, bamafan323, stepped up with a monumental act of kindness and loaned me his cachemobile to help me stay in the race. While my wife joined forces with half of the StarGateKrewe to keep her early lead, I ventured over to Nanny's Mountain in Gaston County to pick up a good helping of stars.

During June, we were out and about caching with friends from SC, IkeHurley13 and SCGeoNinja, when we had to make the sudden trip to the emergency room. The ER doctor told us we would have to cut back on the 'adventuring'. We knew the cache race would either need to be called off or end then as at 3am Saturday morning we were unsure if we would even be able to continue our caching streak much less the race. We both agreed to call the race with whatever our totals were that Friday.

We had been keeping a rough total individually but were unsure of who actually won. I assumed that since I had been behind thus far that I didn't make up quite enough ground to have taken the lead so I was slow and reluctant to tally the results. I knew I might be a sore loser. I was right. I lost 255.5 stars to her 268 stars. It wasn't until the end of the June that I finally tallies the results so I could at least post the anti-climatic results to those who had been following our race on the Greater Charlotte Geocaching Club forums online. This is my promised results cache.

To locate this Letter-Box Hybrid cache, you will need to begin your search at N35° 22.316 W080° 43.106

At this location, you will be standing at the exact spot that my wife told me mid-June that we were having a baby and that I would soon be a father. That late night ER visit was due to the baby telling us that we were doing too much and that it needed a break.

From this location of importance to me, venture north to the nearest sidewalk. Once here, turn to the right and follow the sidewalk until you reach a crosswalk leading to the southeast across the single car width drive to the next sidewalk. Follow this sidewalk eastward until you reach another crosswalk. Watching for traffic, cross eastward to the next sidewalk. Once at this corner, turn south and cross the sidewalk south to the next section of sidewalk.

Once at this section of sidewalk, turn southwest and cross the crosswalk the next section of sidewalk. Follow this until is comes to a 'T' with another section of sidewalk. Here, turn right and walk to the end of the sidewalk. Here you should be at an intersection of the roads. Cross the street (carefully watching for traffic) heading west, not south and you should find yourself on another section of sidewalk. Follow this section of sidewalk until you reach a crosswalk. Ignore the first crosswalk and continue until you reach the next crosswalk.

Cross here and continue on the next sidewalk. This sidewalk will come to a fork with a branch off to the left. Talk this left and follow the sidewalk to where it turns to the right at the corner of the building. When you reach the corner, the cache is located just on the other side of the fence from where you stand. You might just be able to see it if you look hard enough but I doubt it. Happy hunting!

I may have lost the race, but it was for a worthy reason. One that I will look back on as a one of the first fond memories of my child and their life many many years down the road. Thanks for being a part of it with this cache!
