ECHELON is the name used in popular culture and global media to describe a signal intelligence operation and network run by the 'Five Eyes', of which New Zealand is a signatory nation – along with Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. It is purported that the ECHELON network downloads and disseminates information that it can intercept – and that it was originally created to monitor Soviet communications. This system gathers communications in the form of:
- Radio communication
- Commercial satellite trunk communications
- Microwave
- Cellular (mobile, long-range wireless)
- Fibre optic (internet, email, fax, other digital data)
- or GPS (yes...)
In the goal of preventing/discovering:
- Terrorist plots
- Drug dealing operations
- White collar crime (securities fraud, a la Bernard Madoff, Enron scandal)
- Political, diplomatic and military intelligence
- General civilian reconnaissance
ECHELON software is assumed to exist at large military bases (a ‘Security Operations Centre’) with radomes (radio dishes inside large white domes) in at least the five participatory countries. Two of these bases are known to exist in New Zealand, GCSB Tangimoana and GCSB Waihopai, the latter of which was famously popped in 2008. Right: Say hello, ECHELON!
So essentially ECHELON is sort of similar to that cool new show that premiered on TV1 recently.
Thankfully however, this is all moot because this puzzle has nothing to do with ECHELON. None of the above information or links will help you. It’s similar in some aspects, such as that governments initiated it but do not talk about it, it has ties with corporate interests; but that’s about it. It hasn’t debuted in New Zealand yet, but it could do soon.
It’s not quite ECHELON…
…but it rhymes with Orion.
Once you've figured out the rhyme, you're halfway there.
This IS an educational puzzle. Along the way you'll learn about something that we found truly fascinating, but never knew about until recently. (Isn't it amazing what you can find on Wikipedia?) This is something that's all around us, in the air practically, yet few people seem to know about it. We think you'll find it incredible too.
There's no need to visit the posted coordinates. There's also no need to visit the three extra reference points we’ve listed below. You will, however, need all these coordinates to figure out where we’ve hidden the cache, and it is important to know that its location can be determined with precision.
Good luck.
"You are being watched. The government has a secret system--a machine that spies on you every hour of every day. I know because...I built it. I designed the machine to detect acts of terror but it sees everything...violent crimes involving ordinary people, people like you, crimes the government considered irrelevant. They wouldn't act, so I decided I would, but I needed a partner--someone with the skills to intervene. Hunted by the authorities, we work in secret. You will never find us. But victim or perpetrator, if your number's up, we'll find you."
