August Kristoferson was an early pioneer on Mercer Island, and he
established his homestead and a dairy farm here in the late 1890s.
The milk and cheese produced on the farm were taken by wagon to the
Franklin Landing dock on the West side of the island, and rowed
across the lake to Leschi for sale in Seattle.
Another pioneer family, the Lucas family, also owned part of the
land in this area, and had a large dairy farm that ran down toward
the current business district. The neighborhood to the North
therefore ultimately came to be called Lucas Hill.
In 1980 the old Kristoferson homestead property was turned into
the Homestead Field park and playfields.
