Geocache Description:

Hail smiling Morn, smiling Morn
That tips the hills with gold, that tips the hills with gold
And whose rosy fingers open wide the Gates of Heav'n, the Gates of Heav'n,
And whose rosy fingers open wide the Gates of Heav'n!
All the green fields that Nature doth enfold,
All the green fields that Nature doth enfold,
At whose bright presence, Darkness flies away,
Darkness flies away, Darkness flies away!
At whose bright presence, Darkness flies away, flies away, flies away,
Hail, Hail, Hail, Hail,Hail, Hail, Hail, Hail!

"Hail Smiling Morn" composed by Reginald Spofforth in 1810, is the anthem of Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir (visit link) If you aren't smiling when the Choir starts singing, you will be by the time the song ends - Darkness really does fly away!

This is a 3½ mile walk with 12 caches along the hillside above Ewden Valley. I have started the walk in Bolsterstone (Hail, Smiling Morn), but you can start from the parking area for the Nature Reserve (Darkness flies away) near Stocksbridge Golf Course as well. Parking waypoints are given for both locations. Don't do the series in reverse - you will regret it!
Watch out for livestock (cows, sheep and horses); keep geodogs and geokids under close control. The route is along signposted footpaths and some public roads. Please do not take shortcuts across unmarked land as the route passes by working farms and over a golf course.

This multi-cache takes you to the information board for Townend Common Nature Reserve. You will need a pen. To find "Darkness flies away" answer the questions below. All the information you need is given on the information board. Substitute your answers into the formula:

N53 (A-B).(GxB)+((B+D)xC)+(D+E) W001 (F-E).((B+E)xH)-((C-E)xD)

A = How many species of diving beetle are found on the Common?
B = And how many species of dragonfly?
C = How many symbols are there of partnership members at the bottom right of the board?
D = What is the estimated length of time to restore the heathland?
E = How many colonies of palmate newts are on the Common?
F = Add together each digit of the Steel Valley Project telephone number (including STD code). The total = F
G = How many hectares of heathland does the Coalfield Healthland Project aim to restore?
H = What is the scale of the map?

Note: I couldn't find a route from Townend Common to the cache site, as there are no designated footpaths on any maps. The views are spectacular, but you can easily get lost on top, so I suggest you take the long way round.

When you have worked out the co-ordinates, continue your walk down Common Lane. Turn left on the road and walk past the Golf Clubhouse. About fifty feet further on is a stone stile which takes you between two houses onto the public footpath over the golf course. Head for the two yellow posts you can see up the hill and keep going to a stone wall and another stile. Walders Low (believed to be the burial site of a Saxon chieftain) is on the hill top to your right. The path now takes you over fields to another stile (wooden) by a farmhouse. Please keep dogs on a lead, they have free-range ducks here.

If you've reached here, you've past the cache!
