Carbon dread: Keynes is dead!

In late 2009 the findings of the carbon emission inquiry tabled its final report to the senate committee, fittingly entitled The Value of Greenery1. It provided some thought provoking commentary on the inquiry, ultimately leading to the Gillard government issuing a press statement forecasting a carbon price of approximately $20 per tonne2.

Though not specifically citing earlier works, the influence of predecessor or related studies such as Amongst the trees3, Ripples in time4, the German investigation Emissionsfrei 5 and Pipe Dreams6 clearly set the foundations for its findings. To some extent, the somewhat unrelated, and much earlier study, F Minor7 which in the detailed commentary declared “oils aint oils” have, some would say, brought about a cultural sea change that made the government’s dogged determination on this issue more palatable.

Palatable, it may be, but the blatant disregard of Keynesian principles will no doubt provide headaches for future governments, irrespective of the environmental impact that may, or may not, eventuate.

With this contextual background, and with the benefit of hindsight, it is no great leap of intellect to see the business model that underlies the success that has been built in Bastards Inc8. Keynes may be dead, but entrepreneurial endeavour survives. The government's carbon response, and the ingenuity of organisations such as this, have effectively created a new (and powerful) sector in the economy. Something not predicted by the 2010 report Your taxes at work9 and clearly an oversight by the author.

At a political level, the government will be facing an increasingly difficult situation of balancing the opposing views of, not only, mining and environmental interests, but also this new carbon-sector (who have a strong voice and significant financial interests in the continuation of the tax). This conflict may well be the tipping point for the current government.

Political heads will roll.
