Le 27 mai 1944, à 6h30, 144 bombardiers B24 décollent d’Italie sous escorte de chasseurs P51 Mustang. Leur mission : « Bombarder le terrain d’aviation de Montpellier ».
La route est tracée de San Giovanni en Italie vers le fleuve Volturno puis l’Île de Ponza puis le Cap Roux,… L’appareil avec ses 10 hommes d’équipage vient du large et en approchant du littoral au niveau du Cap Roux, à 9h20, le B24 Libérator « Ophélia Bumps » reçoit de plein fouet un obus de la DCA allemande. Celui-ci explose à l’intérieur même du poste de pilotage tuant instantanément le pilote, Sous-lieutenant Robert V.Batz, le co-pilote, Sous-lieutenant George E.Erlewine, le navigateur, Sous-lieutenant Robert T.Bragg, le mécanicien, Sergent-chef Ward O.Bowman, mais sans faire exploser le robuste Libérator qui continue à voler, désemparé.
Le Sous-lieutenant James A.Logan et les mitrailleurs, Sergent Clyde K.Peters, Sergent Robert F.Royer, Sergent Albert G.Little, le radio, Sergent-chef Gene J.Vodopia évacuent de l’avion en feu en sautant en parachute tandis que l’avion commence à piquer vers la baie d’Agay.
Le 3ème mitrailleur, Sergent William J.Ramsay, après s’être extrait difficilement de sa tourelle, s’apprêtait à sauter lorsque l’appareil explosa.
Le parachute du Sergent Robert F.Royer se mit en torche. Son cadavre fut rejeté par la mer.
Les quatre survivants seront faits prisonniers par les allemands.
L’épave sera découverte par hasard en août 1984 par 42m de fond au milieu de la passe de rade d’Agay.
