Geocache Description:

This time the treasure is simple and works well as a holiday-cache for people who want to be familiar with the (industrial) history of Estonia. The coordinates lead to a place near the square built on the site of the former wool mill, near which there are even more objects of interest. A brief summary of this place's history is written below. Don't be alarmed, no people live in the house very near to the cache. If necessary, take additional camouflage material for the cache container from nearby. Have a pleasure working!

The Kärdla-Hiiu Wool Factory (Dago-Tuchfabrik Kertel) was founded in 1829 in Suuremõisa, but brought to Kärdla the following year by the brothers Konstantin and Eduard von Ungern-Sternberg. The conditions were favorable: harbor, river, plenty of clean water and local building materials. The factory, which decisively influenced the development of Hiiumaa, continued to grow very quickly. At first it was powered by a 36-hp steam engine. 210 workers were employed there in 1830, but in 1880 already 770. Kärdla with its 2,000 inhabitants, became a notable town for the time.

In 1908 during an economic crisis, the Narva Manufactory engulfed this Kärdla Woolen Mill, and though they still worked until 1941, when the premises were set on fire by the retreating Soviet troops in World War II, it never became so successful again.

Factory Square monument was erected in 1982, author Mati Karmin. A hollow shape planted on a granite base symbolises a fabric looming machine. The copper plate affixed to the base bears the building year of the new factory-building, 1873. The 4-story main wing was one of the most prominent industrial buildings of the time in Estonia. At the same place, the years of operation - 1830 to 1941 - are written.

Next to Factory Square on the shores of Nuutri river there is a building with a long chimney - a power plant built in 1949 upon the former paiting house of the mill. In 1977 the diesel engines were conserved. Today, exciting events are occasionally held there.

The Long House (light green) is a one-story building located in the Now the central library of Hiiumaa is located there. The Beach Park is located behind this house. There was once a cemetery of the Swedes, but the baron of Kärdla replaced it with a park. For a long time it was hence known as the Baron's Garden.

InSe or InseneeriaSeeria (Engineering Series) is a cache-series, the parts of which are all connected to engineering in some way or the other. The series will be quite diverse in cache size, type, location and difficulty, though, so one need not worry - everyone should find something manageable. Hope you'll have as good a time seeking these caches as I have devising and hiding them. I wish you success!
