Os Moai — cabeças da Ilha de Páscoa — são das formações rochosas mais famosas do mundo. Em Portugal, em várias serras, também encontramos cabeças rochosas, sendo as mais conhecidas as da Serra da Estrela.
Na Serra do Pisco, próxima do Castro dos Castelos, local onde terá existido o primitivo Carapito, encontramos igualmente uma formação granítica que, quando vista a partir de uma posição específica, se assemelha a uma cabeça humana. A esta foi dado o nome de “Cabeça do Velho”.
A partir da sua localização, pode ver-se a zona do Castro dos Castelos, que é o principal ponto de visita nas proximidades.
Em agosto de 2025, um incêndio consumiu as florestas da Serra do Pisco e, por isso, a paisagem tornou-se menos interessante. No entanto, continua a valer a pena a visita.
A Cache
É composta por um contentor relativamente pequeno, contendo o material habitual: logbook, caneta e a stash note explicativa do geocaching.
O Percurso
Apesar de grande parte do trajeto já se encontrar asfaltado, é recomendável a utilização de um veículo adequado a caminhos acidentados, uma vez que a parte final apresenta várias irregularidades e, especialmente no inverno, pode revelar-se de difícil acesso. Caso não disponha de alternativa para além de um automóvel ligeiro, aconselha-se o estacionamento no local onde termina a estrada asfaltada, junto a um aviário, seguindo depois o restante percurso a pé.

The Moai — the heads of Easter Island — are among the most famous rock formations in the world. In Portugal, in several mountain ranges, we also find rocky “heads,” the best known being those of Serra da Estrela.
In Serra do Pisco, near Castro dos Castelos, the place where the original Carapito is believed to have existed, we also find a granite formation that, when seen from a specific position, resembles a human head. It has been given the name “Cabeça do Velho” (“Old Man’s Head”).
From its location, you can see the area of Castro dos Castelos, which is the main point of interest in the surroundings.
In August 2025, a wildfire consumed the forests of Serra do Pisco and, as a result, the landscape became less appealing. However, it is still well worth a visit.
The Cache
It consists of a relatively small container including the usual items: logbook, pen, and the geocaching explanatory stash note.
The Route
Although a large part of the route is already paved, it is advisable to use a vehicle suitable for rough terrain, since the final section is very uneven and, especially in winter, may be difficult to access. If you only have a regular car, it is recommended that you park where the paved road ends, next to a poultry farm, and continue the rest of the way on foot.
