This cache is located on the southern slopes of Cuilcagh (666m; Irish: chalky peak), Co. Cavan.
Cuilcagh stands tall in SW Ulster and offers hill walkers the chance of a great day in the hills with an international flavour. In August 2010 my friend Gerry and I started walking at the Bellavally Gap (Co. Cavan) - up the 4 X 4 track and then, on to the open mountainside. From here a faint path led us along the upper rim of a vast SE facing "amphitheatre" offering extensive views over Upper Lough Erne and Lough Oughter. About half-way to the summit it was time for a break and, as luck would have it, we found an ideal spot where nature provided a sheltered bench (now called Gerry's Seat). Here we enjoyed a cuppa whilst picking out the various features in the panarama that lay before us.
You, too, can enjoy a mountain picnic on Gerry's Seat and then, simply reverse the route back to the starting point. However, if you have the time and can arrange a lift you can continue walking along the rim right to the summit of Cuilcagh (for even more extensive views). Then, head NW along the ridge for a bit towards Tiltinbane before descending the Cuilcagh Way to the land rover track and on down to the Cuilcagh Mountain Car Park/Marble Arch Caves Visitors Centre (Co. Fermanagh). If you are really fit you might include the whole ridge to Tiltinbane (569m) walking with one foot in Co.Cavan and the other in Co.Fermanagh - it's not as painful as it sounds. If you are considering the "through" walk allow at least 6 hours and, as this is a remote mountain environment ensure you have the necessary hill walking skills, clothing, equipment and food/water. Pick a fine day and you'll not be disappointed; pick a rainy day and you'll get ..... WET.
The cache is a smallish tab lock container inside a camouflaged nylon geocaching bag. Please replace carefully in an upright position - hopefully doing this will keep the log dry.
