The Tall Ship Windy is a four masted, gaffed rigged, top sailed schooner.
The Windy was built as a modern interpretation of the last days of commercial sailing on the Great lakes. Tall ships played a vital part in the birth of the City of Chicago.
By 1848 two hundred tall ships sailed into Chicago daily. As the 3rd largest port in the world, 28,000 ships annually sailed across Lake Michigan to the Port of Chicago. London and New York, both located on an Ocean, were the only ports larger than Chicago at the time.
By the mid 1800's Chicago was exporting grain as far away as Russia.
Timber milled in Michigan, for construction of the City of Chicago, made more money for the mill owners than the entire California Gold Rush.
Tall ships were so important to the birth of the City of Chicago the city founders included a tall ship in the Official City Seal
