This cache is located near Saint-Petersburg University of
Civil
Aviation, where the Mig-31 fighter jet (from Gromovo airbase)
installed as a monument.
The Mikoyan and Gurevich MiG-31 is two-seat, high-speed,
high-altitude Russian interceptor, equipped with two turbofans. The
plane entered operational service in Soviet Anti-Air Defence Forces
in 1982. Maximum speed of the MiG-31, slightly lower than of its
predecessor, the MiG-25, is Mach 2.83 at high and Mach 1.23 at low
altitudes. In case of emergency need the plane can fly faster than
Mach 3.2, but with the risk of severely damaging the engines and
fuselage. Radar of the plane can track up to 24 targets at once and
engage six of them. The plane can simultaneously attack air and
ground targets. Upgraded Mig-31M version can even lock on starting
ballistic missiles. Claimed detection range is up to 400 km against
AWACS-size aircraft. Also the MiG-31 itself can be used as a
mini-AWACS; it enables other aircraft with less sophisticated
avionics, such as MiG-25 or Su-27, to be directed to targets
spotted by MiG-31. The MiG-31 is operated by Russian and Kazakhstan
Air Force. More...
