Geocache Description:

Easy drive up and grab

Next to this cache location is the Salvation Army Thrift Store; it was the site of this young man's Eagle Scout leadership project. His project was to remove the stock from the store, clean the store, construct new shelving units and then restock the shelves and bins.

This young man served as the Senior Patrol Leader for a term; and during that time earned a life lesson. The Troop was hiking the Confederate approach to Shiloh; a 20 mile hike most of it along a busy winding two lane highway. One of his fellow scouts struggled; he kept falling behind and was miserable. At a lunch break under an oak tree the Senior told the other scouts to each take gear from the struggling scout, that his pack would be emptied of all gear except for a snack and a water bottle. The scouts followed the senior's lead and hiked on. Later in the day the scout faltered again; this time the Senior cut the hike short, making the 20 miles but not stopping to answer all the trail questions. He made this decision for the good of the troop, it was a demonstration of leadership.

I was criticized for not awarding the scouts that made the hike the medal for completing the hike requirements. The parents of a few scouts thought their sons earned the medal. What they did not understand is that their sons, and the senior in particular, earned a lesson in leadership that day. The senior was awarded another medal and patch instead; when he made the rank of Eagle.
