A short series of caches around the Hough Windmill.
The Hough Windmill can be approached from several public footpaths in the surrounding area.
The windmill is open on Sunday afternoon's during the Summer months. Entry is free and volunteers are on hand to tell you the history of the area.
If doing the caches on a Sunday you may park in the Swannington Heritage car-park. At other times park on St George's Hill and use the footpaths.
The landscape of the area still holds evidence of mining over a period of 800 years, the earliest record dating to 1205. Early mining was by quarrying, then by driving adits and then by bell pits. The coal accessible from bell pits was worked out by the 15th century and wooden shafts were sunk to deeper seams, coal and water being extracted by horse gins. Evidence of these three types of working can be seen on the Gorse Field.
All the caches are along public footpaths.
